This beautifully restored armchair was designed by Jaroslav Šmídek and produced by TON in the 1960s.
Šmídek was part of the postwar generation of Czech designers who followed in the footsteps of Jindřich Halabala, a pioneer of modernist furniture in Czechoslovakia, known for his classic bentwood furniture. His work reflects the same focus on clean lines, functionality, and craftsmanship that made Czech design internationally respected.
This piece is a fine example of the so-called Brussels style, which developed after the international success of Czechoslovak design at the Expo 58 World's Fair in Brussels.
It has been professionally and fully restored and newly upholstered in a beautiful fabric designed by the fantastic artist, Kitty McCall.
